Advising Q and A: Recent Answers

Where can I find out if my transfer credits were accepted?
I took some classes at a local PSU campus this summer and I want to make sure the credits were accepted since those classes are prerequisites for classes I am already enrolled in for the fall. They were approved by Pitt at the end of Spring Term and I earned a C or better in each but I want to be sure I'll get credit so I know if I need to make schedule changes for Fall term before everything is full. Is there a location in the Student Center or somewhere else where can I find out? Thanks!
Answer:
Here's the steps to check online:  1. In My.pitt.edu, go to PeopleSoft.  2. Click on Self Service 3. On the bottom left hand corner, Click Transfer Credit.

Can I use CLEP credit to fulfill gen ed requirements? I am a sophomore A&S student.
Unfortunately, the College of Arts and Sciences does not accept CLEP test credits. The College of General Studies does for certain courses (http://www.cgspitt.org/clepcfm.cfm) and the CBA accepts a maximum of 15 credits (http://www.cba.pitt.edu/admissions/clep-program.php).

Should I take bio and chem in the first semester?
I am going into Pitt with a tentative biology major. My advisor asked if I felt comfortable taking both bio and chem in the first semester, and I ended up scheduling for both because I don't want to get behind. A girl I was talking to (with a pre-dentistry track) had a different advisor, and hers suggested taking just one this semester and doubling up later so she could ease her way into college and not get overwhelmed right off the bat. Is separating the classes more manageable or am I better off taking them together as I start? I realize it's more of a personal and individualized question, but if you have any input at all, I will be most appreciative.
Answer:
The answer is: It's up to you.    I know it doesn't help very much. but here's what we normally tell students when we are asked: As a science major, sooner or later you will be taking two science courses at once, maybe even three. The courses are difficult, but the ability to cope depends on the student. Because the advisors meet with you one on one, it's usually okay just to follow their recommendations on the pre-enrollment sheet. We have many students that register for one science, just as we have many that register for two. The class load is definitely  manageable if you keep up with the readings and the work for each class.

Electives
Are there "gym electives" like "Weight Lifting" or "Martial Arts"?
Answer:
Hi Alex,  Our course descriptions website can give you all the listings for our classes, specifically the "gym classes." Each of our gym classes are 1 credit each, and yes, martial arts classes are offered. To check out the complete list, follow this link: http://www.courses.as.pitt.edu/ In the first drop down menu, select PEDC classes for semester 2121 ( Fall 2011 Semester). Click "List All". Keep in mind that not every class will be open in our registration program when you actually come to PittStart to register.  Hail to Pitt!

Can we register for open classes with closed recitations?
The answer is no. Because the recitations are required for courses, lectures cannot be taken without a simultneous registration in a recitation or a lab. If a class is closed you will need to contact the instructor to ask about any seat availability in the closed course.  Sometimes instructors will give you permission to enter a closed course, or they may have a waitlist for the course. Often they will tell you to attend the first day of class and then they will see if there is room.  You should also always check back on the schedule of classes to see if your desired course opens up during add/drop (the first two weeks of classes).

How do freshman advisors at PittStart handle not knowing my AP exam scores when initially scheduling my classes?
Going to PittStart on May 26-27 but AP scores don't come out until July.  Especailly since APs will be in calc, physics, bio, and English lit.  At PittStart, do we talk about contingencies if the AP scores are high enough to qualify for credit?  Thanks.
Answer:
Have you checked out the Arts & Sciences Advising Center webpage which has detailed information about what courses and scores are required to receive college credit? That link is here: http://www.as.pitt.edu/undergraduate/pdf/apcredit.pdf   Your appointment is coming up soon, and AP credits can be worked out with your advisor. MAKE SURE to alert them of your situation. Hail to Pitt!

Answer:
Hi, I'm a Peer Advisor with Arts and Sciences. Unfortunatey, the dance minor is only available to students enrolled in the School of Education. I believe it is part of the Wellness program track. If you want to stay involved with dance, there is a Pitt Dance Ensemble, whose sole purpose is to promote dance and allow students with a passion for it to continue the practice and study of it. Here is a link to there website: http://www.pittdanceensemble.com/about.html. Definitely check it out! As for the coffee pot, I'll have to refer you to Panther Central, they handle all housing information. The website is www.pc.pitt.edu and the phone number is 412-648-1100. Although you should be able to find a list of what you may and may not bring to your place of residence in the Residential Handbook. Hail to Pitt!
